APPLIED
Culture
Our employee-owned culture is the foundation of our success. By empowering our employees to drive innovation and achievement, we're able to make groundbreaking advances in our industry.
Professional Standards
The Constitution grants Congress the authority to impose taxes. Federal tax laws are generally enacted through the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (IRC), which is published as Title 26 of the United States Code (26 U.S.C.). Congress provides the current U.S. Code in electronic form for public access. The IRC is complex. Its provisions should be considered in the context of the entire Code, applicable Treasury Regulations, and relevant court decisions.
Treasury regulations, or federal tax regulations, explain the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s official interpretation of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). They also provide guidance on how taxpayers can comply with the Code’s requirements. Treasury regulations are published in Title 26 of the Code of Federal Regulations (26 C.F.R.). Current electronic versions are available to the public through the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO).
AICPA Standards for Tax Services (SSTSs) establish enforceable standards for our firm members providing tax services. They apply regardless of where members practice or the types of taxes involved.
Standards for firm members who provide clients with consulting services grounded in technology and industry expertise, as well as management and financial skills.
Professional Ethics
Our tax services follow Treasury Department Circular 230, which sets mandatory conduct requirements for tax professionals representing clients before the IRS, including attorneys, certified public accountants, and enrolled agents. It establishes standards for competence, diligence, and ethical conduct, and outlines the disciplinary procedures that may apply when those standards are not met.
Guidance and rules that help our firm members—including those in public practice, business and industry, government, and education—meet their professional responsibilities. Learn about the work of our Professional Ethics Executive Committee.
